A Mask’s Love
I am a mask.
A piece of cloth that has been used for decades,
to prevent the spread of pathogens.
From the Spanish Influenza to Covid-19,
I have been a staple in protection.
I only want to help.
And yet there are those who throw me away.
And exclaim how I harm them…
Keep them from breathing.
After years of pain and suffering I am no longer needed
and it has caused celebrations.
To be able to meet with loved ones,
rejoice in schools and offices.
I am no longer needed…
and I can say I am proud to have done my job,
helping those who need protection.
Now instead of keeping your face covered by my cloth,
you can show the world your smile,
and converse with one another as you must.
Now instead of smelling the disinfectants which made their presence known,
you can smell the blooming of Spring,
and the sweetness of Summer;
the rain which falls during Autumn,
and see your breath as you gasp at the beauty of Winter.
I am happy to be put on the side, for I have done my job.
I have served my purpose.
I have watched people change with the times of sickness,
but I also get to watch now as people let themselves be free
and act without fear when venturing out to the open.
