“Blue” – David Robillard

I always used to love the color blue. It was the color of so many things, from the sea to the sky. I loved all shades of blue.

Royal blue, deep and vibrant. The color of the ribbon I won in my first writing competition. I had entered only because my friends wouldn’t stop urging me to, but to my surprise and theirs, I took first place.

Sky blue, pale and calm. The color of bright, sunny days. It brought me back to the day I graduated college. The venue was outside, and we had to squint to see the speaker through the glare.

Cyan, strong and bright. The color of the dress my wife wore the day I proposed. I still remember the fear I felt in the moment before she said yes.

And yet, there is one shade of blue I will never forget.

Dark blue, metallic and sharp in the night. The color of the car barreling forward down the wrong side of the highway.
