Pacify Her

by Miriam Da Ponte

It’s been days since the baby cried for his pacifier. He’s a better sleeper now; sign of a healthy boy.

She can’t wait to let the pediatrician know. He doesn’t wake up in the night to beg for the boob.

How lucky that he lets her sleep for six hours straight!

Even left alone in his bouncing chair, he doesn’t screech for attention.

She loves watching him enjoy time with “da-da” as they coo and giggle.

It’s been weeks since she last heard her baby, but she checks on him —even in the night, checks that his pacifier is still in his mouth.
