Lingering Stares
Standing in separate corners
But we each still hold a gaze
Glances alternating
One of our favorite games
I’m wrong and you’re right
And your right and I’m wrong
A different tune on your guitar
But always the same song
No one ever budging
Not one apology
But somehow, I always find
Your eyes on top of me
Pressing down my throat
Until there is no air
Holding me so gently
But pulling at my hair
Alternating glances
Now in paralleled lives
I’ll be a starving writer
You’ll have at least two wives
And we’ll never speak again
Our sins both forgiven
But now I always know
I will feel those eyes in every room I’m in
And you’ll feel mine
And go insane
And you’ll think back before wives one and two
Back before the pain
To my laugh and my smile
And eyes under the moon
And how even in separate corners
Separate lives
You see them in every room
